Electrocardiography ECG for HCAs

This learning provides the underlying principles, theory and practical element to undertake electrocardiography.

Applicable audience	This learning is suitable for clinicians who are required to undertake an electrocardiography in line with their role.
Pre-requisites	Learners must be able to fully participate and undertake the practical element of electrocardiography.
Delivery method	This learning is delivered face to face in a classroom.
Duration	This learning will take 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete.
Materials and resources required	Learners will need to attend the face to face session and participate in the practical element.
Refresher	This learning should be completed as required.
Minimum/maximum learner numbers	A minimum of 6 and a maximum of 12 learners are required for this learning.

The aim of this learning is for the learner to acquire the knowledge and practical skills required to undertake electrocardiography.

Describe the basic principles of electrocardiography, including the electrical activity of the heart and how it is represented on an ECG
Describe the anatomy and physiology of the heart, particularly the conduction system, and how it relates to the ECG waveform
Demonstrate and correctly place ECG leads on a patient, understanding the significance of each lead placement and the corresponding heart regions they monitor
Identify and interpret the components of a normal ECG, including P wave, QRS complex, T wave, and intervals like PR, QT and recognise common abnormalities
Identify life-threatening ECG patterns, such as ventricular fibrillation, asystole, and ST-segment elevation, and initiate appropriate emergency responses.
Identify and troubleshoot common ECG artefacts (e.g. muscle tremors, loose leads, electrical interference) to ensure accurate readings
Describe patient preparation and safety while undertaking the ECG procedure, ensuring the comfort and safety of the patient and will communicate effectively with patients about the process
Describe and accurately document ECG findings in the patient’s medical record and communicate significant findings to the appropriate healthcare provider
Identify ethical and legal considerations related to ECG testing, including patient consent, confidentiality, and accurate reporting of results
Recognise the importance of continued professional development in ECG interpretation and remain competent in undertaking the procedure
