Oral Suctioning in Children

This learning provides an understanding of the underlying knowledge and principles regarding administration of oral suctioning in a child.

Applicable audience	This learning is suitable for learners who work in a health, care or school setting and support children who have additional healthcare needs.
Pre-requisites	There are no pre-requisites required for this learning.
Delivery method	This learning is delivered through a virtual classroom.
Duration	This learning will take approximately 1 hour to complete.
Materials and resources required	Learners should have access to a computer with an internet connection and Microsoft Teams.
Refresher	This learning should be completed as required.
Minimum/maximum learner numbers	A minimum of 4 and a maximum of 12 learners are required for this learning.

The aim of this learning is to develop safe practice and competence to administer oral suction when a child/young person in their care requires it.

Outline the anatomy of the natural airways in order to be competent to care for a child/young person who requires oral suction of the natural airways
Demonstrate use of necessary equipment, its maintenance and correct disposal of waste. Demonstrate an awareness of the risks involved with the procedure
Identify when to seek appropriate advice/support
Discuss how to maintain accurate records as required, demonstrate appropriate documentation, record keeping, information sharing and reporting
