Course summary

This learning provides the necessary information to equip learners with the understanding around how diabetes is a health condition that requires strict monitoring and management. While this can usually be done by the individual, it’s essential that anybody who spends time with them knows how to help, should it be needed.

Applicable audience	This learning is suitable for learners who monitor and manage diabetes as part of their role, including the requirement to administer insulin.
Pre-requisites	There are no pre-requisites required for this learning.
Delivery method	This learning is delivered by a virtual classroom.
Duration	This learning will take 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete.
Materials and resources required	Learners should have access to a computer with an internet connection and Microsoft Teams.
Refresher	This learning should be completed as required.
Minimum/maximum learner numbers	A minimum of 4 and a maximum of 12 learners are required for this learning.

The aim of this learning is to provide an understanding of the different types of diabetes and the knowledge and skills to care for a client/patient with diabetes.

Learners will be able to:

Describe the different types of diabetes
Define normal blood glucose levels
Recognise the symptoms of hypoglycaemia & hyperglycaemia and how to manage both conditions
Describe the different types of medications and insulins used to manage this condition
Describe the different injection sites and safe administration of insulin
Describe side effects of insulin therapy
Define how and when to seek further help from a medical team or call the emergency services to report concerns in patients condition
Identify the next steps emergency support and follow up
