Learners must be familiar with their own organisation’s policies including Medicines Management policies.

Learners should have access to a computer with an internet connection and Microsoft Teams.

This learning should be completed every year.

Minimum/maximum learner numbers

A minimum of 4 and a maximum of 12 learners are required for this learning.

The aim of this learning is to develop the knowledge and skills of Health Care Support Workers to safely manage medicines in the clinical setting.

Learners will be able to:

  • Understand local organisation's Medication Policies and Procedures ensuring compliance with local regulations and best practices
  • Describe the “five rights” of medication administration required for Patient Identification and Medication Verification
  • Describe Medication Administration Techniques - how to correctly administer prescribed medications, including oral, topical, and inhaled forms, following the prescribed dosage and timing
  • Identify and mitigate risks associated with medication management, including medication errors and adverse events
  • Identify signs of Adverse Drug reactions (ADRs) or side effects and report promptly to a supervising healthcare provider
  • Recognise and address barriers to medication management such as cognitive impairments, physical limitations, or language barriers, by adapting their approach to meet the patient/clients needs
  • Discuss the importance of consent
