This learning covers the definition of safeguarding adults and further explores abuse and the categories of abuse.

Applicable audience	This learning is suitable for learners who treat or support patients/client/service user’s health and care needs.
Pre-requisites	Learners should be aware of their Safeguarding Policy before completing this learning.
Delivery method	This learning is delivered by an eLearning package.
Duration	This learning will take approximately 1 hour to complete.
Materials and resources required	Learners should have access to a computer, tablet or smart phone with an internet connection.
Refresher	It is recommended that this learning should be completed every 3 years.

The aim of this learning is to examine the importance of making safeguarding personal and examine what can be done to minimise the risk of abuse and neglect. The learning will define the role of the individual in safeguarding adults and the role of the Local Authority including examining the purpose of a Section 42 enquiry. The learning also explores relevant legislation linked to safeguarding adults.

Learners will be able to:

Identify possible signs of abuse or neglect, using a person-centred approach
Know how to safeguard an adult at risk/where to refer a concern
Demonstrate an understanding of the issues surrounding suspicion of adult abuse, harm and neglect
Understand the importance of communicating effectively with adults at risk, particularly those with mental capacity issues, learning disabilities or specific communication needs
Know how to appropriately contribute to inter-agency assessments by gathering and sharing information
Feel confident to document/record concerns appropriately
Understand the significance of mental capacity issues in safeguarding enquiries
Understand the link between 'deprivation of liberty' and safeguarding
