It is recommended that this learning should be completed every 3 years.

The aim of this learning is to raise awareness of self-neglect and its indicators. The learning explores why an individual may self-neglect and how practitioners can navigate cases. The learning also examines some of the legal guidance and policies in place when working with self-neglect cases.

Learners will be able to:

  • Identify how to recognise and work with people who self-neglect
  • Explore limits and responsibilities of intervention
  • Explain the application of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 in relation to self-neglect
  • Consider when adult safeguarding may be an appropriate response
  • Recognise when child safeguarding may be required
  • Describe best practice and learn how to develop strategies to achieve this
  • Define how to best respond to cases
