Gastrostomy Care in Children

Course summary

This learning provides an understanding of the underlying knowledge and principles regarding gastrostomy care in children including feeding via a gastrostomy device.

Applicable audience	This learning is suitable for learners who work in a health, care or school setting and support children who have additional healthcare needs.
Pre-requisites	There are no pre-requisites required for this learning.
Delivery method	This learning is delivered through a virtual classroom. In addition to the virtual classroom session, three one hour work place visits to have supervised practice, assessment and competency completion will be required.
Duration	This learning will take 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete and will include a competency document completed in practice.
Materials and resources required	Learners should have access to a computer with an internet connection and Microsoft Teams.
Refresher	This learning should be completed as required.
Minimum/maximum learner numbers	A minimum of 4 and a maximum of 12 learners are required for this learning.

The aim of this learning is to develop the learners ability to confidently carry out safe practice of feeding via a gastrostomy device as detailed in the workbook and competency document by demonstrating knowledge and understanding of the theory underpinning practice.

Learners will be able to:

Describe the anatomy and physiology of the digestive system
Identify and understand the reasons for gastrostomy feeding
Discuss the skills required to affectively care for a child/young person with a gastrostomy tube/button/device
Demonstrate the skills to competently deliver a feed to the child/young person via their gastrostomy as per their care plan
Identify risks involved with this procedure and describe when to seek advice as appropriate
Describe how to implement and maintain accurate records
Establish appropriate documentation, record keeping, information sharing and reporting
