This learning provides the underpinning knowledge and principles required in order to administer a dose of medicine given into a muscle of a specific site.

 

Applicable audience

This learning is suitable for learners who are registered or non-registered who are required to administer intramuscular injections as part of their role.

Pre-requisites

Learners must be familiar with their own organisation’s policies including Medicines Management policies. Attendees require a mentor in-practice, to sign off a competency document.

Delivery method

This learning is delivered by a virtual classroom.

Duration

This learning will take approximately 1 hour to complete.

Materials and resources required

Learners should have access to a computer with an internet connection and Microsoft Teams.  A competency document will be provided.

Refresher

This learning should be completed as required.

Minimum/maximum learner numbers

A minimum of 4 and a maximum of 12 learners are required for this learning.

The aim of this learning is to provide the knowledge to underpin the practice of doing a intramuscular injection and understand the skill of intramuscular site selection, equipment used, injection technique and management of complications.

Learners will be able to:

  • Identify sites for injections related to anatomy and physiology
  • Understand the correct equipment selection
  • Describe patient preparation, positioning and preparation of the skin
  • Describe appropriate injection technique
  • Identify risks and complications
