Introduction to Wound Care Management

Course summary

This learning is a general introduction for anyone that is new to wound care and is keen to progress their knowledge in wound care.

Applicable audience	This learning is suitable for learners who work in a clinical or care setting who is new to wound care.
Pre-requisites	All clinical colleagues who care for patients needing wound care and have some exposure to wound care in your clinical setting. It would be helpful if you are able to observe wound care management in practice prior to the course, but not essential.
Delivery method	This learning is delivered by a virtual classroom.
Duration	This learning will take 2 hours and 30 minutes to complete.
Materials and resources required	Learners should have access to a computer with an internet connection and Microsoft Teams.
Refresher	This learning should be completed as required.
Minimum/maximum learner numbers	A minimum of 4 and a maximum of 12 learners are required for this learning.

The aim of the learning is to provide the background theory related to the skin, its function and the process of wound healing. It provides information on dressing types and their application in practice. It gives the learner an understanding of the professional responsibilities when caring for patients living with wounds.

Discuss the types of wounds and wound healing
Identify policies and procedures for dressing technique including infection control
Identify wound infection and action
Outline dressing and their role in wound care
Understand good skin care and the use of emollients
Explore NICE guidelines for wound care management
